A New Day is Dawning
For so many years, the Red Wings would hamper the development of their prospects. The lone benefit of injury woes is the opportunities presented to the younger guys. Granted, I would trade any of them for a healthy Datsyuk, but the Wings don’t have one of those right now. What they do have, is a crop of hopeful players that are beginning to contribute in meaningful games. Last night was a perfect example. Glendening, Sheahan, DeKeyser, and Nyquist all contributed key points in the 4-3 shootout win. To make the playoffs, the Red Wings are going to need their youth to grow up, fast.
It’s Going To Get Better
Despite their up and down play, lack of power play threat, and weak defense, the Wings still hold the final playoff spot. With a healthy Howard and the imminent return of Datsyuk, we could be looking at a second half surge. Don’t get me wrong, there are some obvious deficiencies, but things are looking up. If they could just become a bit more disciplined with their team defense, the rest will fall into place.
Trade Rumors?
I wish I had some to report. Holland isn’t publicly admitting that he’s pursuing any players (not that he ever does). It would be nice to add a top 4 defenceman, but that guy isn’t available right now. Unfortunately, there are only 4 teams in the league who don’t stand a chance at making the playoffs, and with no sellers, there can’t be buyers. Detroit needs to improve from within, or hope some teams hit a losing skid going into the Olympic break.
What do you think is missing from this year’s Red Wings team?
